January has a way of making people restless.
New plans. New routines. New promises to yourself. Often louder than you need them to be. Faster too.
But at rasalila, the new year doesn’t start with fixing yourself.
It starts with listening.
New moves don’t have to mean harder, higher, better. They can also mean softer. Slower. More honest. A different way of stepping into the room. A different way of holding your body. A different choice about when to push and when to pause.
Every year, you might arrive in January with expectations. About your body. About progress. About where you think you should be by now.
But conscious movement isn’t about repeating what you already know. It’s about staying curious.
What happens when you let your body lead for once?
What if a new move isn’t a trick or a shape, but a decision to breathe deeper, to take up space, or to stop apologising for how you move?
If you want to try this right now, pause for a moment.
Notice where your weight is.
Notice your breath.
Is there a place in your body asking for attention, not improvement, just attention?
Give it space, let it move through your body by breathing towards it.
That, too, is a new move.
In class, new moves can look small from the outside. A hesitation that turns into trust. A pause that becomes grounding. A laugh when something doesn’t work out. These moments matter. They’re where real change happens.
Presence is not a warm-up for progress.
It is the practice.
The new year can be an invitation for you. Not to reinvent yourself, but to reconnect. To check in with your energy instead of your goals. To ask yourself what kind of movement actually supports you right now.
Maybe you want to sweat. Maybe you want to stretch. Maybe you need structure. Or maybe you need play. There’s no right way to begin. There’s only your way.
At rasalila, we believe new beginnings don’t need pressure. They need space. Space to try. Space to rest. Space to show up as you are, without a before-and-after story attached.
So if you’re stepping into this year with expectations, see if you can loosen them a little. Let your new moves come from your body, not your head. Let them surprise you.
New year. Check. New moves. Go. Same you. Yessss… Just a little more present.
That’s why we feel that a New Year doesn’t ask you to fix yourself
Love,
Willemijn
